Bigger audiences on Instagram do not translate to more conversions within a business.
It is not uncommon for business owners to believe that having a larger audience on Instagram will result in making more money within their business.
However, this just isn’t the case.
Small audiences are powerful.
The purpose of this blog is to highlight some of the advantages of having a small audience on Instagram to remind you of all of the incredible things that you can do with your current audience whilst working towards growing your following.
‘When you seek to engage everyone, you rarely delight anyone’ – Seth Godin.
Although a bigger audience has its perks, it makes it more difficult to respond to your DM’s, comments and questions on posts, which is a big part of forming a genuine connection with your audience.
One of the biggest advantages of having a small audience is that you are able to engage in genuine conversations which allows you to connect with them on a personal level to understand their needs. In turn, this will help you to figure out how best to serve them through your free content and paid products and services.
Such a huge part of marketing comes down to how well you know your customer. And it is much easier to connect with people and have meaningful conversations when you have a smaller audience.
The ability to engage in conversations with your audience allows you to build genuine connections which inevitably lead to people investing in your products and services.
When you have a small audience, you are able to build and establish trust at a much faster rate than those who have larger audiences. Because smaller audiences are often more niche, your followers are likely interested and find value in your content. In comparison, people with larger audiences generally attract followers from people who are following the crowd and are likely to unfollow once they realise that the content doesn’t align with them.
So, a smaller audience means an increased likelihood of higher engagement. And high engagement means an increased likelihood of higher conversions.

Brand loyalty refers to the positive association customers attach to a brand, product or service of that brand exhibited through repeat clients, product repurchases or friend referrals.
A small audience provides you with an opportunity to create an incredible customer experience and foster brand loyalty with these people.
Give your client the confidence to implement changes you discussed by spending additional time with them after their designated appointment time. Take the time to respond to your DM’s and answer questions from your audience or refer them to a resource. You might even like to reach out to 5 people in your audience who regularly engage with your content and send them a gift in the mail.
The satisfaction that your audience has with your brand means that they aren’t tempted to switch to a competing brand.
A smaller audience equates to more time to form positive and memorable experiences for a customer which in turn will help your business grow through repeat customers and referrals.
There are many advantages to having a small audience on Instagram, many of which become harder to capitalise on the larger your audience grows. Make the most of every opportunity to connect with your audience, and foster brand engagement and loyalty whilst working towards your bigger goal of audience growth as this will inevitably support the success of your business.
