Instagram's newest feature, Instagram reels, offers business owners a new way to connect and engage with followers. But are Instagram reels the secret to standing out and growing your business online?
I explore what Instagram reels are, why they matter, and how business owners can use them to grow their businesses online.
Instagram reels are catchy, short-form videos varying from 3-30seconds in length, that you can create within the Instagram app using a mix of text, music, stickers, and other special effects.
Reels uses a proven, highly addictive formula to attract and engage users, with its concept modelled after the wildly successful TikTok app which currently has 800 million users worldwide.
If you have a public account, reels are able to be shared with the wider Instagram community using both the ‘explore’ page and a dedicated reels feed which appears at the very front and centre of the main navigation page in the Instagram app.
The shelf life of a static post or long-form video is roughly 1-2 days of reach. In comparison, reels will continue to reach new people for days, sometimes weeks after you post them. This means that more people are discovering your brand which can, in turn, result in new leads and clients.
Because reels are still a relatively new feature (and Instagram has some serious competition in TikTok), Instagram is, at this time, heavily favouring reel content over other content forms. This means that it is easier to get discovered on the explore page by posting a reel, which is favourable for growing your brand and online presence.
People are busier than ever before and are consuming more content than ever before, so the quick, catchy and entertaining nature of reels makes them genuinely enjoyable to watch. In today’s digital world, things change fast. Trends explode overnight. Consumer expectations change. And it’s those who get in early and adopt these changes that will reap the reward.
Reels are a great way to communicate important messages to your audience in a quick and easy-to-digest manner. A person that is educated is likely to be more engaged with your brand, and will therefore be more inclined to book an appointment or make a purchase from you.
Valuable content is content that is highly related to your audience's wants and needs; it’s the stuff that they love so much it makes them want to share it with others or save it for later. Reels are a great way to deliver this type of content – share a tip, teach something new or inspire…the list is endless.
