Are you wanting to start marketing your business on Instagram?
Let me share with you some advice from my own personal experience that could aid you in your marketing journey.
The beauty of hindsight is that I am able to look back on my Instagram journey with new found knowledge and help you to avoid the mistakes that I’ve made along the way.
Below, I’ve shed some light on the 4 things I wish I knew before I started marketing my business on Instagram.
When I first started on Instagram, I didn’t have a strategy and I didn’t have any business goals. The content I created was heavily inspired by what other people in my industry were posting at the time, and I was stuck in a cycle of just chasing likes and engagement.
But this isn’t what grows a business!
Instagram marketing isn’t about going viral or having a large follower base. It’s about building a profitable page that allows you to do the work that you love. For some of us this may look like attracting and converting more clients, for others it may look like working with brands, or building an engaged audience that you can then develop and sell a digital course to, or perhaps its a combination of these things.
Having a strategy to follow helps you to get to your end destination in the fastest way possible and achieve your broader business goals. With a strategy, it means that every single piece of content that you share has a purpose, and every action that you take on the platform is intentional. This purpose-driven marketing strategy ensures that your business will grow faster than if you were just posting on a whim and making things up as you go along.
It was only once I had created a content strategy that I began to make money and turn a profit from my Instagram page.
If I could turn back time and change one thing about my Instagram journey, it would be that I had implemented a strategy from the start.
As I mentioned before, when I started on Instagram I was focused on getting likes and good engagement from the content I posted. If I shared a post that didn’t get a lot of likes, I would feel so disheartened and worry why my audience hadn’t connected with it. Maybe they don’t agree with what I’m saying? Maybe they don’t like me? And so the narrative continues.
It took a while for me to realise that just because a post doesn’t receive a whole bunch of likes, doesn’t mean it's a bad post!
Instagram should be used as a tool to market your business and not as a form of validation. It’s really important to make this mindset shift in order to protect your mental health and wellbeing while using the platform.
In recent years a more positive change that has come from the app is the algorithm’s focus on more meaningful interactions. Therefore, success on Instagram is no longer determined by the number of followers you have or how many likes a piece of content receives. Instead, it is based on the quality of interactions that you have with your audience.
And so, that post you’ve just shared only needs to connect with one person. Because if just one person saw that post and reached out to you privately through DM, joined your mailing list, shared your content with a friend, purchased a product, or booked in for one of your services, then that is a successful post!
Even if it only got 20 likes.
If you are someone who is using Instagram as a validation tool, then I would encourage you to shift your mindset and think a little differently about what success looks and feels like to you on Instagram. Because when it comes to marketing and growing your business using the platform, you can never underestimate the power of one.
The brands that do well on Instagram are those that have unique identities. People who are trend-setters not trend-followers aren’t concerned with what everyone else is posting, instead they are more focused on what kind of content their ideal customer finds valuable.
Having a strong personal brand is absolutely essential when it comes to landing clients through Instagram and using the platform to grow your business, because it sets you out from the crowd and makes you personable.
Marketing is an exercise in communication and if you don’t know who you are as a brand and what your business offers than you won’t be able to communicate your value and attract the right people to your business.
It was only once I stopped to consider who I was and what made me unique that I truly started to see results from the platform. For me, that was when I started to move away from dietetics to nurture my unique magic as a health practitioner with a wealth of online marketing knowledge that I could share to support other health practitioners market and grow their businesses online.
“A year from now you will be glad you started today.”
I’m not too sure who said this, but it is so true!
I initially thought about starting an Instagram page in my second year of university but put it off until two years later when I was halfway through my Master’s degree, and my only regret was that I didn’t start sooner.
The reason why I say this is because with hindsight I now know how beneficial having an established brand on Instagram can be when you’re in the workforce looking for opportunities.
Why did it take me so long to get started?
Well, to be frank, I was scared.
I thought that I didn’t know enough and was worried about what other people would like. I didn’t feel ready.
But the reality was that I was actually more than ready, I just let my own limiting beliefs hold me back from taking action and starting to market my business on Instagram.
If you can take anything away from this today, I want it to be this… Don’t let fear, a lack of confidence, or the feeling of not being fully ready hold you back from taking action and pursuing your dreams.
If there is one thing that I have learned in my business journey, it is that there will never be a perfect time to do anything and you will certainly never feel completely ‘ready.’ So, just start!
